SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone demo

Posted by Nek | 6/08/2008 07:31:00 PM | ,

Good news: Sling has confirmed that it will bring SlingPlayer Mobile to iPhone/iPod Touch, so you will get stream TV directly on you iPhone/iPod Touch.

Great! It that true? Yes, how about a video demo of SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone:

Bad news: The software showed in the video was just a "pre-alpha proof-of-concept", it was not released.

"Apple hasn't officially accepted them into the developer program yet. So what we've seen is basically an app developed out of bounds for jailbroken devices -- thus it goes without saying that Sling won't be releasing it until they can do so legitimately. "

When could i get SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone? Sling might release it by sometime this fall or winter, if everything goes well.

Mobile phone popcorn trick

Posted by Nek | 6/08/2008 07:23:00 PM | ,

Do you usually bring more than one mobile phones with you? And they are kept in you pocket? Oh, i'm afraid there is some bad news for you then. Look at this, four mobile phones can pop popcorn:

So if you do need to carry some mobile phones, please don't put them in you pant's pocket.;-)

This time rumor comes from the very reliable FT, bring in the following information:

"The new version of the Apple iPhone is set to be sold at significantly lower prices than the existing one, in a tacit acknowledgement by the US technology company that its previous sales strategy was not sustainable.

Apple has bowed to pressure from mobile phone operators and agreed they can subsidise the latest iPhone, expected to be unveiled by Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, on Monday."

It seems that Apple finally agrees to allow mobile carriers to subsidize the iPhone. This is a great news, especially for AT&T customers, because they can receive a $200 credit or rebate with a 2-year contract at AT&T while the new iPhone would still cost $399 at Apple stores, according to MacRumors.

You have seen that mysterious box which claimed to be sent by Apple to Australia reseller. What's inside that box? Someone says there is a new iPhone with a front camera in the box, because he/she unboxed it. Pretty good, huh?

But both Gizmodo and Engadget say the photo is fake:

From Gizmodo:

"I don't even think Apple considers using cardboard in their boxes unless it's covered in a glossy finish."

From Engadget:

"Hey look, that NDA box which Apple never, ever sends was opened to reveal a severely misaligned reflection. "

They must be right. :->

Not enough rumors? Now there are more. A Vodafone employee has provided further details of 3G iPhone(iPhone2) to iPhone Atlas, you will be surprised by them i think:

"The back is gloss black.

The 4 models we have have a black skin wrapped around the back and glued into place. This is how they came from Apple.

All are running v2.0 of the firmware.

The bootloader hardware exploit is now fixed.

The phone is running V 04.41.01 modem software.

The phone is locked down like no phone has ever been. At this stage, you can’t jailbreak it and you can’t hardware unlock it.

There is an added icon for contacts. This allows you to go straight to your contacts without having to hit the Phone icon first.

The GPS works very well. It will attempt to obtain your position via WiFi first, cell tower second, then satellite third. The accuracy appears to be within 3 meters.

We were getting a data transfer of 140kbps on average. It droped down to 70 kbps when we went inside.

Apart from that, the “feel” is much the same. The phone is smaller (I would say 20 percent) and it is noticable when you pick the unit up."

Good news and some very bad news:-(
If they were true.

Hey! It seems that some "real" pictures of the incoming 3G iPhone(iPhone2) has been leaked to CrunchGear by a tipster. You could see the new iPhone will actually be more thinner, in both black and red colors, and the design is changed a bit. Video calling is also found on the pictures.

Enjoy!

From the pictures:

"Video just became a little more fun. Start a real tme video chat with other AT&T subscribers via 3G networking, or with iChat buddies via WiFi. The video calling revolution has begun."

Another hi-res video of HTC Touch Diamond

Posted by Nek | 6/06/2008 08:54:00 PM | ,

We brought you some hi-res videos of HTC Touch Diamond's TouchFLO 3D UI yesterday, and now here is another one from Pocketnow. Also with resolution of 640x480:

HTC Touch Diamond boot video from Joshua Topolsky on Vimeo.

In related news, HTC may delay the launch of Touch Diamond until the end of the month in Europe. Why?

HTC says(via Gizmodo):

"HTC Touch Diamond™ - Delay In Stock Delivery
Due to circumstances beyond our control the estimated delivery date for the HTC Touch Diamond™ of the 9th June will not be met. Please rest assured that HTC have provided us with a new worse case scenario delivery date of 23rd June.

We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Only three days left, and the rumors keep flooding in. One "very reliable" source told Engadget that 3G iPhone's firmware has been released to carrier partners for testing. And from the firmware, we could expect what will happen on the 3G iPhone:

*quad-band GSM support
*A-GPS
*tri-band UMTS / HSDPA

And even more hardware details:

"Infineon PMB6952 / S-GOLD3 six-band UMTS / HSDPA transceiver
Murata LMRX3JCA-479 tri-band amplifier
Sony SP9T antenna switch for GSM / UMTS dual mode
ARM 1176JZF-S - Main CPU (same as in 1st gen iPhone)
Skyworks 77427 chip - UMTS / HSDPA tx 1900MHz, rx 2100MHz
Skyworks 77414 chip - UMTS / HSDPA 1900MHz
Skyworks 77413 chip - UMTS / HSDPA 850MHz
Internal build model number: n82ap (1st gen iPhone was model m68ap)
UMTS Power Saving option - on or off
Hooks for Global Locate Library (GLL), software that handles A-GPS related commands for the host processor"

If the 3G iPhone really supports tri-band UMTS / HSDPA, that means it could be use in any 3G-capable market in the world. So MSNBC (via MobileWhack) reports the 3G iPhone will be available in 70 countries by the end of the year including US, Germany, France, Britain, Austria and Ireland.

One more thing, Apple is reported to be the No. 3 manufacturer of multi-function handsets worldwide:

One "very reliable" but "can't be named" source sent a photo of a Apple box to MacTalk yesterday. As you could see, there are words on the box:

"SUBJECT TO TERMS OF NDA
DO NOT OPEN UNTIL TUESDAY JUNE 10TH, 2008"

You know, June 10th is exactly the first day after the WWDC keynote speech where Steve Jobs is expected to announce the new iPhone with 3G or GPS and more. So what's in the box? Let's guess the new 3G iPhone or iPhone2.

"Our source strongly believes that the package contains the much coveted 3G iPhone. Why is there only one and why is it here early though? Our source believes that the iPhone contained within is for promotional purposes, ie."

Why iPhone will be available in Australia soon? Easy, because Vodafone and SingTel both announced they will bring iPhone to Australia later this year.

OS X iPhone?

Posted by Nek | 6/05/2008 09:37:00 PM | , , , ,

Readers from both Gizmodo and CrunchGear took some sneak photos on the WWDC show floor in Moscone Center. Surprisedly, one of the banners shows "OS X iPhone". What exactly does that mean? Under the "OS X iPhone", there is a line reads "The world’s most advanced mobile platform." Maybe it is just something about the iPhone OS, App Store and SDK.

There is also a "OS X Leopard" banner:

For more WWDC 2008 early photos, please visit Macnn.

A Taiwanese company said it's one of Apple's component suppliers, and sent some pictures of two kind of touchscreens to iLounge claiming they are being used in the upcoming iPhone. But i just can't believe in this, because those touchscreens only have 2.8” and 3.2” sizes, both are smaller than the current iPhone's screen.

Would this imply the coming 3G iPhone(or iPhone2) will have smaller sizes too? Say an iPhone Nano, or just an iPod Touch Nano? You judge.

Google Maps' mobile edition has been updated to version2.2 and gained some new features. Now you could get all the transit directions just as the web version of Google Maps of over 40 cities in North America including Chicago, the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, Vancouver.

This new version also comes with another surprise, you can find the last transit trips of the day and more easily browse through earlier or later trips. Those are not even available on the desktop version of Google Maps.

Last, BlackBerry devices will get faster searching and star ratings for businesses with this new version. For BlackBerry devices and other Java-based phones, just visit the following link from you mobile phone's browser to download and install it:

Or you could just watch this demo from Google:

Symbian S60 3rd Edition phones jailbroken

Posted by Nek | 6/05/2008 07:12:00 PM | , ,

I got my iPhone jailbroken in the first 30 minutes after i unboxed it. Many thanks to the clever hackers. But if you have a Symbian mobile phone, you will get more restrictions because those phones are usually locked to protect the user from malware, and there is no such a "jailbreak" way like what we've got for iPhone.

According to F-secure, a talented Spanish modder has developed an easy to use privilege escalation hack for Symbian S60 3rd Edition phones:

"The hack provides unlimited access to the phone's file system. With this access any number of modifications can be made.(...)It makes modding an S60 phone as easy as jailbreaking an iPhone."

That means to run a single SISX installation file on Symbian S60 3rd Edition phones will become more easy with this hack:

"The SISX installation package contains a simple graphical application to remove the access restrictions of any application that is currently running on the device."

But at the moment this hack comes with side effects:

"
After escalation the operating system is not able to start any new applications until the phone is rebooted."

Anyway, this is a very good start, we could expect more in the near future.

Exclusive: UCWEB mobile browser iPhone edition released!

Posted by Nek | 6/05/2008 06:30:00 AM | ,

I love my iPhone on the whole, but it's Safari web browser is buggy. It crashes a lot when i load non-iPhone-optimized web pages in it. And now here comes the rescuer, the UCWEB mobile browser for iPhone.

In case you didn't know, UCWEB is a very popular mobile browser in China, it's fast, functional and could be run on most mobile phones. UCWEB has 4 editions, Symbian, Java MIDP2.0, PPC/SP. Now it comes to iPhone.

The main features of UCWEB iPhone edition mobile browser:

1. WEB and WML webpage browsing
2. WiFi, CMWAP(only in China), CMNET access
3. bookmarks
4. upload and download files
5. search
6. address auto-type
7. WAP prefetch
8. supports landscape mode
9. supports webpage folding
10. copy, paste and more

This is the first beta of UCWEB iPhone edition, so it might be a little bit unstable. But since UCWEB is the best mobile browser in China, i believe it's iPhone edition will also become better and better in the future, because the UCWEB Team is great.

Screen shots(slide show):

How to get UCWEB iPhone edition?

Just add the following source into your iPhone Installer, and then you can download and install it:

As we reported earlier, the guys from Mobilitytoday.com are now reviewing the HTC Touch Diamond. Today they released a video about the problems they found on the HTC Touch Diamond:

I afraid even in the final launch version, you will still encounter some the these problems showed in the video.

MogoTXT: Send free SMS from iPod Touch

Posted by Nek | 6/04/2008 09:05:00 PM | , , ,

There are already several ways to send SMS from Apple iPod Touch via WiFi, and one of them is using MogoTXT. Because you could use MogoTXT on any mobile phone, no matter an iPod Touch/iPhone or an old Motorola. For iPod Touch users, MogoTXT will connect to internet and let you send free SMS messages to you friends.

How MogoTXT works? According to it's CPO Andrew Won:

"You do not need a cell phone with a browser to use Mogotxt’s service. You can use any old cell phone and you can text using Mogotxt exactly the way you already text. We kept it simple.

Mogotxt is the first and only company to offer the following:

1. Free mobile-to-mobile texting to and from any cell phone, Apple iPod Touch or computer. (Very soon, Mogotxt will also roll out SMS service for the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP devices. A native SMS application for the Apple iPod Touch (also useable on the iPhone) is also in the works).

2. Free one-to-one text messaging that allows SMS messages to be easily sent and received among cell phones and iPod Touches. (As noted, other Wi-Fi or other network-enabled devices will be supported soon).

3. Free reply-all, group texting messaging (chat) with an unlimited number of cell phones and iPod Touches. (Again, other Wi-Fi or network-enabled devices to be supported soon).

4. A number of advanced features that enable users on the fly to (a) initiate and conduct up to five group chats simultaneously, (b) invite others to join ongoing chats, (c) join or quit ongoing chats, and (d) manage their mobile lifestyle via a brand new message management console."

The disadvantages of MogoTXT:

1. Both you and your friend will need a MogoTXT account to send or receive SMS
2. The SMS messages sent by MogoTXT are ad-supported

Homemade ad for iPhone by female user

Posted by Nek | 6/04/2008 08:52:00 PM | ,

You've seen a lots of iPhone pranks, homemade ads videos, but this one is a bit unique. It's also a homemade ad for the iPhone, but it's creator is a female iPhone user. Here we go:

The unnamed female uses After Effects to make this ad. It's not bad, with nice graphic and great background music, but the rhythmic beat is a little weak.

[Thank you lihongchen!]

update: YouTube video link added in case the one above is too slow to load.

update2: Ok, here is a photo of the creator:-)

Replace iPhone's battery for just 7.29 dollars

Posted by Nek | 6/04/2008 08:18:00 PM | ,

I'm a huge iPhone fan, i just love it. But one common problem for iPhone users is the battery of iPhone is non-removable. At least it's no so easy to be removed. Sure you can just ask Apple to do this job for you, but it will cost you 90 dollars.

Let's find a much cheaper way. You could just buy a set of the Toolkit for iPhone, it just cost you 7.29 dollars, and it's shipping free. Just 7.29 dollars, you will get all you need to replace the battery of iPhone:

1. a
3.7V 1400mAh battery of course
2. a
screwdriver
3. a case opener
4. a manual

Go and get it on DealExtreme.

Zottd's ported the popular media player VLC to Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. That means now you could play MPEG/MPG, AVI and MP3 media formats directly on you iPhone/iPod Touch. The better news is, vlc4iphone will support more formats soon, including FLAC, OGG, VCD, DivX, WMA and WMV.

vlc4iphone is now for beta testers only. If you've made a donation to Zottd like me, you can try vlc4iphone now from their installer source. I tried vlc4iphone on my iPhone last night and found some bugs:

1. no sound on some MPG videos
2. doesn't support landscape mode
3. crash often

Nevertheless, i'm looking forward for the official release of vlc4iphone, it's a great app.

Use iPhone to control a robot

Posted by Nek | 6/04/2008 02:19:00 AM | , ,

Finally, a very decent use of iPhone. The guys from Battlebricks.com use and iPhone to control a robot built of Lego NXT Robotics Kit. This is cool!

Steps:

1. Build a robot
2. Write some Java LeJOS Robot code
3. Write some Google Web Toolkit web application code
4. Plug in your iPhone into the robot
5. Use a browser or another iPhone to control the robot

How it works?

" The rolling bot above relies upon the Lego NXT light sensor's ability to read the contrasting colors on the iPhone display."
